Generational Curses: When the Same Fate Repeats
7 September 2026 · 8 min read
In Czech families we hear it phrased plainly: 'that is our family curse.' Stripped of drama, a curse is a rule that was made once, under pressure, and never revoked. Someone survived by making a hard promise — never trust, never leave, never be seen — and the promise outlived the danger and stayed on as an inheritance.
How to recognise a generational pattern
Look for repetition with the same shape but different faces: separations at the same age, losses of money at the same stage of a business, illnesses that arrive after the same birthday, daughters who marry the same character in a different body. Look also at what the family never talks about. The silence marks the place where the rule was signed.
A curse is a contract nobody remembers signing and everybody keeps honouring.
The debt behind the rule
Behind most repeating patterns there is an excluded person or an unpaid grief — a child who died, a relative erased from the family story, a wartime decision never spoken about, property taken or taken from someone. The system keeps re-enacting the event until it is acknowledged. It does not need justice. It needs to be seen.
How we work with it
We map the line back three to four generations and locate the point where the rule enters. We name it in plain words. Then we return what belongs to the ancestors — their fate is theirs — and keep only what is yours to live. The work usually needs a reading for the map, energetic work for the body, and a spoken ritual for the release. Sound holds the change in place while the nervous system learns the new instruction.
What ending it actually looks like
Not fireworks. The pattern simply loses its inevitability. You notice the moment where you would have repeated it and you do something else, without a fight. Children in the family often shift first — they were carrying the least of it, so they put it down the fastest.

Not a curse — a repeated arrangement. Reading that sentence took away years of shame about my family.

The warning about contempt is the heart of it. I had been trying to put the weight down while despising the person who handed it to me.
